The emotional path of Chinese Philosophy—from Li Zehou’s “Emotional Proverb”
Author: Huang Yusong

Li Zehou and Meng Peiyuan were the pioneers of contemporary rejuvenation in the Chinese philosophical emotional path, and the difference between the two is: Li Zehou’s thoughts are historical materialism, while Meng Peiyuan’s thoughts are Confucian. There are three problems that require reflection in the current rejuvenation of emotional philosophy: one is the problem of the existence of emotions; the second is the neutral value of emotions; and the third is the problem of the excess of emotions.
This article is a speech by the author at the “Li Zehou Philosophy Thoughts in the Chinese and Western Regions” special meeting of the 22nd International Chinese Philosophy Association on June 29, 2022. The original topic is “The Love between Li Zehou and Chinese Philosophy”.
No doubt, Li Zehou was one of the most important thinkers in China in the 1980s. In fact, many people, including myself, were implicated by his thoughts in the 1980s of the 20th century. Li Zehou’s contribution to thinking and academic research is multifaceted, and the “emotional theory” is the most common philosophical department among them. And emotional questions are a fundamental problem in Chinese philosophy.
I have three important points to discuss: First, briefly elaborate the history of the emotional path of Chinese philosophy; second, discuss the historical positioning of Li Zehou’s “emotional theory”; third, reflect on the current situation of the emotional path of Chinese philosophy.
1. Historical review of the emotional path of Chinese Philosophy
Discuss on emotional issues. Chinese Philosophy, especially Confucian Philosophy, can be divided into three historical forms:
(I) The emotional characteristics of pre-Qin Confucian philosophy
Since the discovery of “Guodian Chu Sutra”, the academic community has realized widely that the pre-Qin Confucian philosophy was not the “nature theory” described by Taoist scholars of the Song and Ming Dynasties, but the “emotion theory” or called “roots of love” or “roots of love”The most classic text is nothing more than the “Self-Presentment of Nature” [1], which belongs to the Sin Meng School. From this we can also see that the text of “The Doctrine of the Mean” also needs to be explained from the beginning of the philosophy of emotion.
I want to emphasize a fact here: Li Zehou’s emotional statement, and at the same time, my supervisor Meng Peiyuan’s “Confucianism in Emotions”, which was actually earlier than the unearth and release of “Guo Dian Chu Jian” Book. [2] Therefore, in terms of contemporary rejuvenation of the Chinese philosophical emotional path, they are pioneers.
(II) The emotional pressure from Li Ao in the Tang Dynasty to the entire Song and Ming cognition. The second period of Confucianism was initiated by Han Yu and Li Ao, and formed the entire huge Song and Ming cognition. The basic characteristics of this Confucianism form are in the relationship回投投在线的片在线的片:回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在线片,回在href=”https://twsugargirl.org/”>Baozhuang This Confucianism is based on the form of “imperial Confucianism”. [4]
(III) The revival of Chinese emotional philosophy in the era of transformation
In fact, in the early days of the Song and Ming dynasties, until the Ming and Qing dynasties, self-reflection began to occur within Confucian philosophy, and the emotional path of Chinese philosophy also began to rise.
We can even say that Yang心号心号心号心号心号心号心号心号心号心号心号心号心号心号心心号心心号心心号心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心心”[5] The “filial piety” and “fraternity” here, especially “lost”, are all emotions. (Zhu Ximingly said: “lost is emotion, not nature.” [6])
The most classic thing is Dai Zhen’s philosophy. He regarded the “nature principle” or “natural principle” as the “reason” of desire for one’s own “reason”, that is, “the unhappiness of emotions”. He said: “Rule is the unhappiness of emotions, but not the reason is not obtained without emotion”; “Now, it is based on emotionPurchase the Internet and horse feesIf you are unhappy, you will lose your reason. This is the reason that exists in desires.”[7]
The revival of the Chinese philosophical theory approaching the path of progress is the “endogenic modernity” of Chinese society, or “inner modernity”, which refers to the constraints of human beings and the determination of human desires. I have a special discussion on this problem. [8]
2. Li Zehou’s historical positioning of “feeling theory”
The revival of the above principles, accompanied by the “modernity” of Chinese society and Chinese thinking, has been extended to tomorrow, and can be divided into three periods: It is the emotional path of Chinese philosophy in the late empire, and has been discussed later; the second is the emotional path of Chinese philosophy in the modern era, the most classics are the “emotional theory” of Zhuzi, the “emotional philosophy” of Yuan Jiachang, etc., especially Liang Shuming’s “new Confucius”; the third is the emotional path of Chinese philosophy since the opening. [9]
(I) The characterization of Li Zehou’s “Emotional Proposition”
Li Zehou’s “Emotional Proposition” and Meng Peiyuan’s “Emotional Confucianism” are representatives of the above-mentioned third period of emotional path. Therefore, it must be sufficiently determined that Li Zehou made great contributions to the modern transformation and development of Chinese thinking and the revival of the Chinese philosophical emotional path.
However, in my opinion, Li Zehou’s “emotional theory” is of course related to the emotional path of Chinese philosophy, not the emotional path of Confucian philosophy. Regarding Li Zehou’s “emotional theory”, I have made such a qualitative characterization: it is “from aesthetic thinking, whose thinking is the “realistic theory” of Marx in the 1980s of the 20th century, and it sets everything “on the basis of human reality”, and is the “human historical theory” of the nature of historical materialism” [10].
I then pointed out specifically: it is not Confucianism. Of course, this is something to be discussed.
(II) Comparison between Li Zehou’s “Emotional Confucianism” and Meng Peiyuan’s “Emotional Confucianism”
As mentioned above, there are actually two philosophers who are representative and creative in the contemporary rejuvenation of the Chinese philosophical emotional path since the 1980s of the 20th century. One is Li Zehou and the other is Meng Peiyuan.
They all regard emotions as their main body, but they are two distinct understandings. I have just talked about the characterization of Li Zehou’s thinking; while Meng Peiyuan’s thinking is undoubtedly Confucian, so the academic world calls it “Emotional Confucianism” [11].
In the eyes of Meng Peiyuan’s “Confucianism in love”, “feeling can be said high and low”[12] (This is not the “feeling can be said high and low”[13] of Mou Zong’s comparison of “feeling can be said high and low”[13]): To be honest, “feeling” is the “true feeling” of natural feelings, which is called “hence””; To put it forward, “emotion” is “sensual emotion” (this is Meng PeiEnterprise conditionsThe concept of self-created and different from Dai Zhen’s thoughts), is called “benevolence”, which is the physical moral emotion; so that it reaches the highest level, transcends the opposition between truth, and the unity of man and nature, and is called “happy”, whi
